Overview

It’s the middle of the night when 21-year-old Leo arrives on the doorstep of the West Village apartment where his feisty 91-year-old grandmother Vera lives. She’s an old Communist who lives alone, he’s a latter-day hippie, recently returned from a cross-country bike trip which ended traumatically. Over the course of a single month, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder, and ultimately connect. When Leo’s old girlfriend shows up and he begins to reveal the mysterious events of his journey, Leo and Vera discover the narrow line between growing up and growing old.

Peopled with nuanced, beautifully-drawn characters, Amy Herzog’s award-winning play has established her as a remarkable new talent. 4000 Miles had its 2011 world première at New York’s Lincoln Center Theater.

Plays as truthful and touching and fine as Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles come along once or maybe twice a season, if we’re lucky - Ms. Herzog’s gift is to capture the precise texture of life in all its ambiguity and lack of tidy resolution, while still holding our attention fast by tapping into the compassion and curiosity about human nature that draws us (let us hope) to the theatre.

Everything about 4000 Miles seems fresh, particularized, plausible...easily the best play of the season

The sort of rich, satisfying play you should take your grandmother to - especially if she’s as smart and fierce as Vera

Herzog has a wry wit and a skillful hand with dialogue.

[Herzog’s] characters and dialogue are full of quirky surprises, and she knows how to construct a scene that stays fresh and inventive right till the end. The second act of 4000 Miles contains the best new writing for the American stage I’ve seen in years.

4,000 Miles by Amy Herzog is an exquisite play bursting with humanity, honesty and searing emotions cut through with razor wit and observations. An essentially simple story of love, loss and loneliness but the sincerity of delivery grabs at your very soul.
