Overview

Are you a mother who feels stuck in depression? You’re not the only Christian woman who knows what this darkness is like. When feelings of hopelessness, weariness, sadness, anger, anxiety, shame, and loneliness feel impossible to bear, it can seem like God is nowhere to be found. But there’s more to the story than you can presently perceive.

Biblical counselor Christine Chappell has walked these dark paths herself—and she wants to help you to see God’s heart for you more clearly as you endure sorrow and pain. As Christine recounts her own midnight journey through depression and explores stories of desperate sufferers who experienced God’s mercy in the Scriptures, she shows how God meets us in our despair and helps us toward his light—one step at a time.

This book is a balm! I love how much Scripture and narratives from God's Word that Christine uses to encourage and strengthen the weary-hearted. That is really where the comfort lies, in how she points the believer to Christ and His sufficiency for what ails our souls. For me, the content was wonderfully similar in tone to Dane Ortlund's Gentle and Lowly and Mark Vroegop's Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy. Also, the personal tone of the book, written by a woman who has herself struggled through these things means the writing comes with a refreshingly honestly and compassion perspective. Christine poses herself not just as someone who has figured this all out, but as a learner who desires to share what God has taught her through His Word so that it might be a help to others and bring honor to Christ. One of the unique helps of Midnight Mercies is that it is written by a woman to other women, addressing the issues we may face in a unique way, particularly those of overwhelming feelings and emotions. Specifically, the book addresses depression in motherhood, but though not a mother myself, I still found the book very insightful, helpful, and encouraging. I also think the principles could well serve those struggling with other types of sorrow, suffering, or sin besides the book's intended audience of moms struggling through depression. I love that the book is short but packed with lots of truth and helpful insights, as this is what we often need to get started when feeling overwhelmed. Christine's honest and compassionate writing style made this book such a joy to read, and I was a bit sad when it was over! I look forward to using Midnight Mercies in our biblical counselling ministry and seeing how it encourages other ladies with truth from God's Word as it did me!
